After retiring from 20 years of dedicated and decorated service in the United States Coast Guard Ryan was ready to work for himself but often jokes he actually works for his wife of 9 years, Madisyn. Having learned woodworking basics from his own father he set out to hone his craft. Ryan gets inspiration, especially for his vintage style wooden toys, by his 2 daughters who often act as research and development.

Hangar 1790 is a work of love from our family to yours. We both love antique and vintage items, not just for their charm but also their quality. We’ve often lamented “they just dont make them like they used to.” about everything from toys to furniture and home decor. That refrain inspired us to start making items the old fashioned way; handcrafted, quality materials, attention to detail, made to last generations. Everything we create is made to feel like a handmade gift from an old friend.

Many of Ryans creations have been sparked by Madisyn saying “sooo I had an idea”. She encouraged Ryan to take the leap and launch Hangar 1790 and share his works with people who would also love handcrafted real wood items.

She manages the Etsy shop, social media pages, website, and in person market events when she’s not homeschooling her daughters or baking.

Hangar 1790

Hangar 1790 is a nod to Ryans career in aviation in the United States Coast Guard and before as a flight instructor. 1790 is another nod to the Coast Guard, which was started in 1790 as the United States Revenue Cutter Service by Alexander Hamilton.

We operate Hangar 1790 in Lexington in the Piedmont of North Carolina, where we carry on the long tradition of American made craftsmanship this area is known for.
